Trump’s Immigration Agenda Overview
With 2024 coming to a close, January 2025 will see the inauguration of President Donald J. Trump as he returns to the White House for his second term. His campaign addressed a wide range of issues related to immigration policies, and it’s important to know what these policies look like moving into a new administration.
Critical Aspects of Trump’s Immigration Agenda
According to recent news surrounding President Trump’s immigration agenda, the new policies he’s working on with his current administration team will start on his first day in office, January 20, 2025. These policies will surround the ceasing of citizenship for children of illegal immigrants and implementing a process to have large numbers of illegal immigrants removed from the United States. These two aspects are at the forefront of immigration policies.
How Mass Deportation Proposals Could Affect Immigrant Families
According to the American Immigration Council, fewer than half a million immigrants have been deported in a single year. Deportation takes time and several steps to implement. Immigrant families living in the United States without legal documentation who haven’t started the process of a visa or pathway to citizenship could be included in this process.
Birthright Citizenship
In the past, if an illegal immigrant came to the United States and had a child, that child was entitled to birthright citizenship. It is estimated right now from the American Immigration Council that there are 3.7 million children in the United States who have an undocumented parent. Eliminating this policy will not allow these children to gain a Social Security number and force them to go through the immigration system to gain citizenship.
The Muslim Ban
The initial Muslim ban, implemented in 2017 to exclude immigration from seven countries, is likely to be extended beginning in 2025. Many of the countries on this ban list are still predominantly Muslim-based, and adding to that list means that anyone coming to the United States seeking immigration from these countries would be denied.
Restrict Legal Immigration
While the Trump Administration seems to be imposing restrictions on other parts of its immigration policy, there isn’t any evidence that it will impose restrictions on legal immigration policy. The goal is to enforce the established policy for immigrants looking to secure citizenship and route others who may have been in other programs to this process if they are eligible.
